Successful trading in the financial market requires a good understanding of the basics of the market. There are several classifications of securities. Some have already been described. Another type is based on terms of the pay-offs of the instruments. Money market and market of capital are examples.
Money market refers to the market of short-term (assets age of up to twelve months) promissory notes. Market of capital refers to market of long-term (assets age of more than twelve months) promissory notes. Market of capital is often referred to as the bond market (with its instruments having fixed expiry date). Stock market, on the other hand, does not have a fixed expiry date. These distinctions are important when you try to determine the best strategy for investments.
Having made these distinctions, what are the stock market basics? Buyers of shares are investing their funds into the company or entity who issued the stocks. In effect, share holders become owners of the company. Decision making in the company is a function of how much weight a share holder has depending upon the number of shares the holder owns. Greater the number of shares owned, greater the influence of the share holder in the decision making process of the company.
